Tolstiakov, Nikolai

TOLSTIAKOV, Nikolai Nilovich (b. 1883, place of birth unknown; d. 1958, place of death unknown) — graduated from the Moscow Synodal School in 1903; from 1907 to 1913 was the junior assistant conductor of the Synodal Choir; in 1913 received a diploma of the Moscow Conservatory in composition; from 1913 to 1923 taught at the Synodal School (which from 1918 to 1923 was renamed the People’s Choral Academy). Afterwards, experienced a nervous breakdown and retired from all musical activity. Tolstiakov’s compositional output includes primarily sacred and secular choruses, of which opuses 1 and 2 (ten sacred works) and 3 (four secular choruses) have been published. Tolstiakov’s other sacred works remain in manuscript.
