Berezovsky, Maksim
BEREZOVSKY, Maksim Sozontovich (b. 16 [27] October 1745, Glukhov, Ukraine; d. 22 March [2 April] 1777, St. Petersburg) — educated at the Kievan Theological Academy, from where he was taken into the Imperial Court Chapel, where he studied composition under Francesco Zoppis. In 1765 was sent to Italy to complete his musical education; studied in Bologna under Padre Martini, receiving a diploma of maestro of music in 1771. In 1774 returned to St. Petersburg, where he was appointed to the Imperial Court Chapel without a particular position; finding no professional acceptance, in a state of depression, he committed suicide. According to various sources, Berezovsky’s sacred works include as many as twelve sacred concertos, a complete cycle of liturgical hymns, et al. Of these, six concertos and the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom for male voices were published in the late 19th century by P. Jurgenson and others. More recently, in 1989, a mixed-chorus version of the Liturgy as well as some additional choral concertos have been discovered and published by the Ukrainian scholar Mstislav Yurchenko (M. Berezovskii, Khorovye proizvedeniia, Kyiv: Muzychna Ukraina, 1989). Some of them display masterful choral writing, while others are quite simple in artistic design.
