Arensky, Anton
ARENSKY, Antony Stepanovich (b. 30 June [12 July] 1861, Novgorod; d. 12 [25] February 1906, Perkiarvi near Terioki, today Zelenogorsk in the Leningrad district) — graduated from the St. Petersburg Conservatory in 1882 in N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov’s composition class. From 1882 to 1894 taught at the Moscow Conservatory; in 1888-95 conducted concerts of the Russian Choral Society in Moscow. From 1895 to 1901 served as the Administrator of the Imperial Court Chapel. Having devoted his primary activity to secular music (among his works are symphonies, instrumental chamber music, operas, secular cantatas, choruses a cappella,and vocal quartets), Arsensky made a small contribution in the area of sacred music: four choruses, opus 40 (publ. by Jurgenson), and three other works. The musical language of his sacred musical works is typically Western European.
